Sunflowers can become very traditional very quickly, but this color combination changes that for me. I like the burgundy and brown mixed into the orange because it gives the flower more depth and makes it much easier to use with the richer colors I reach for in fall.
I would separate the stems rather than keeping every flower at exactly the same height. Let a few blooms sit forward, turn another slightly to the side, and tuck one lower into the arrangement. That little bit of irregularity makes the whole grouping feel much more natural.
